We've got yet another casting announcement for you! This time we're delighted to share with you the cast of Barbarians, a trilogy of gripping and timeless plays by Barrie Keeffe directed by Liz Stevenson, winner of the JMK Award 2015. Barbarians follows Jan, Paul and Louis as they try to fight their way into a society rife with unemployment and rejection. Bubbling tensions erupt with chilling consequences. Fisayo Akinade makes his Young Vic debut. His previous theatre credits include: The Vote (Donmar); Refugee Boy (West Yorkshire Playhouse; UK Tour); As You Like It (Transport Theatre; UK & European Tour – nominated for Ian Charleson Award); Neighbors (HighTide; Nuffield); Shiverman (Theatre 503); Waiting for Godot (West Yorkshire Playhouse; Talawa UK Tour); Sold (Pleasance Courtyard) and The Edge (New Diorama Theatre). Television credits include: Banana, Cucumber, Ordinary Lies and Fresh Meat. Film credits include: She Who Brings Gifts.
Alex Austin makes his Young Vic debut. His previous theatre credits include: The Striker and Yen (Royal Exchange Manchester); Henry V (Unicorn Theatre; Traverse); The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (Unicorn Theatre), Idomeneus (Gate Theatre); Pigeons (Royal Court); Coal Eaters (Theatre 503); Hope, Light and Nowhere (Underbelly, Cowgate); The Greek Season: Philoctetes/Antigone (Unicorn Theatre); Locked Room Scenario (London); Telling Tales and My City (Almeida); Encourage the Others (Almeida Young Friends) and Platform (Old Vic New Voices). Television credits include: Sherlock, The Interceptor, Musketeers, New Tricks, Holby City and Misfits. Film credits include: Legacy, The Hooligan Factory, Christmas Candle, The World’s End, The Swarm, The Sweeney and Undefeated. Radio includes: Ancient Greek.
Brian Vernel makes his Young Vic debut. His previous theatre credits include: Future Conditional (Old Vic); Takin’ over the Asylum (Royal Lyceum; Citizens' Theatre); Macbeth (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland); The Static and Blackout (Thickskin); The Cherry Orchard and They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) and Four Parts Broken (National Theatre of Scotland; Oran Mor; Traverse). Television credits include: The Last Kingdom, The Casual Vacancy, Grantchester, Prey and Field of Blood. Film credits include: Winter Song, Let Us Prey and Offender.
The JMK Award
James Menzies-Kitchin was a theatre director of thrilling promise. The JMK Trust was founded in his memory to give practical learning opportunities to young theatre directors of similar ability and vision. The JMK Award allows one such director a year to stage their own production of a classic text.
