Introduction To Making: Young Theatre Makers

Introduction to Making: Young Theatre Makers offers time and space to find out more about directing and theatre making and learn how to create theatre shows. Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Learn some new skills around telling stories and how to use different elements when making live performance
- Get to know other aspiring directors and theatre makers and maybe make some connections for the future
- Explore techniques for developing ideas and performances
- Have a chance to think about what stories you want to tell and why you want to tell them
- Find out a bit more about what your next steps might be if you find you want to take this further
- Learn how directors collaborate with other creatives such as set designers, writers etc.
- See a show at the Young Vic
The first part of the program will consist of a one week intensive.
The second part of the program consists of one workshop a month for three months. These workshops will focus on areas you would like to expand on from the intensive week and explore pathways into directing and theatre making.
The program will be led by our Genesis Fellow / Associate Director, Taio Lawson, who will also bring in some guest creatives.
Lunch and travel expenses (within London) will be provided each day.

You must be available for the full week to participate.
Monthly workshops will take place between January and March 2025. Dates will be confirmed in December.

Requirements
You don’t need to have any experience to take part, but we are looking for enthusiastic, committed, creative people. There are 15 places. The programme is open to all aged 18-25 and we particularly keen to hear from people from a Black or Global Majority, LGBTQ and/or low socio-economic or working-class background.
The form will ask for your contact details and any access requirements you may have so we can put appropriate provisions in place as soon as possible.

Recruitment
We will be holding a recruitment session on Wednesday 6 November at 6:30pm - 8:00pm for everyone that applies. This will be an opportunity for us to meet with you and for you to learn more about the program and decide if it is for you. We’ll have the opportunity to get to know everyone who applies before choosing participants.
TAIO LAWSON
Taio Lawson was previously Associate Director of Kiln Theatre (2019-2022).
He was also RTYDS Resident Director at Sheffield Theatres where he collaborated on Love and Information, Frost/Nixon, The Wizard of Oz and Desire Under The Elms.
He was Jerwood Assistant Director on Life of Galileo at the Young Vic and Resident Director at the Almeida Theatre, working on Oil and They Drink It in the Congo.
Taio is on the board for PiPA (Parents in the Performing Arts) which was created by actor Cassie Raine and director Anna Ehnold-Danailov in 2016, to address a lack of provision for parents and carers in the performing arts. Their research reflects the case that those with caring responsibilities are fundamentally disadvantaged, whilst demonstrating that integrating this workforce improves any artistic organisation’s creativity and productivity.
He was also a patron for COMMON which was a non-profit arts organisation that existed to support the UK theatre industry in achieving greater socio-economic diversity, and make theatre more accessible to the working-class; whether they be artists, audiences or communities.
